Kentucky
has many types of agate and it usually occurs in nodular form
and is found in the Borden Formation.
Kentucky agate is commonly a combination of yellow and blue
banding with banding of other colors such grey, brown, pink,
orange, green, maroon, pale red intermixed in small amounts.
Some of the agate nodules also contain moss agate in various
colors such as yellow, pink, red and maroon. Kentucky
agate nodules that contain red and black banding also occur
and they are uncommon.
Kentucky
agate is mainly found in Estill and Powell counties, occasionally
some agate is found also in parts of Jackson, Lee, Madison
and Rockcastle counties. It is mostly found on private land,
all I can tell you is if you see a creek that looks interesting
stop and ask for permission to rock hunt. Garrard and Lincoln
have a lot of geodes containing crystals especially around
the upper part of the Green River. Kentucky agate nodules
can have banding, moss type inclusions and also inclusions
of various minerals such as pyrite, glauconite and calcite.
I like to
display specimens & cabochons at gems shows in Lexington,KY.
A good rock & gem swap takes place the last weekend
in June at Bloomington, Indiana at the Monroe County 4-H Fairgrounds.
The show is always very good, there are usually a lot of old
time materials available that are rare and the sources gone
now. I recommend the show to everyone.

The images
are now being taken with a Sony 5.24 megapixel camera and
it takes excellent high resolution images. Images of some
of the areas and creeks might possibly also be added in the
future.
